“Despite its topographical challenges, Crookes and Walkley has the 6th highest number of cycle commuters in the city.” Really. This statement was made in a letter dated 18th January 2023 to residents in Crookes and Walkley regarding the provision of cycle hangars. It has no value. It implies that there are a significant number of cyclists who commute within Crookes and Walkley. Visual sightings and traffic counts in the area during morning and evening rush hour periods when commuting is at its peak provides a very different perspective. Having witnessed Sheffield City Council’s shameful involvement in the Memorial Trees, the crass stupidity of leaving the extremely dangerous stone sett roadway has having some enhancing qualities followed by the vagaries associated with the vastly distorted viewpoint achieved in the Consultation for the Active Travel Scheme, I was well aware that SCC would probably promote this scheme as a success when it has achieved very little other than widespread frustration and anger. So traffic counts taken over 126 hours provide the following aggregated traffic flows per hour:- Peripheral Roads at the junctions with inner area residential roads including School Road:- Motor vehicles 620 (96.5%) Cycles 11 (1.8%) Buses (1.7%) Inner residential roads:- Motor vehicles 130 (97.2%) Cycles 4 (2.8%)  There are more buses than cycles per hour passing along Heavygate Road/Northfield Road/Crookes whereas the number of cycles along Howard Road/Commonside/Barber Road far exceeds the number of buses due to the very poor service interval the 95 bus provides. The only location where significant flows of cycles is evident is outside Crookes & Walkley Neighbourhood area (CAN), along Commonside where 36 cycles per hour pass. This number is evenly divided with half the flow running within the Walkley area joined by cyclists entering/exiting the three junctions of Heavygate Road, Springvale Road (upper) and South Road.  Although South Road has no bus service, it is now considered a major road with over 300 motor vehicles and 10 cyclists per hour recorded at its junction with Barber Road. I have noted some minor uptake in cycling within Crookes recently, but since the traffic counts began in early August 2022, I very much doubt that the data collected over the last 6 months will change appreciably in the future. Having lived on Western Road for over 48 years and cycled through the area to the lower levels of S1 and S2 some 30 years ago, I know full well that cycling on these hills can never be considered comfortable or safe. All the primary roads and all but four minor roads well exceed the gradients deemed safe by Active Travel. Presumably this is the reason why Connecting Sheffield never included the likes of cycle lanes in the ETROs for CAN. In fact there is very littlle for the cyclists. So why did CS promote the possible introduction of dedicated cycle lanes in the Consultation? It’s noted that approximately one in five respondents have recorded “not enough improvements for cyclists” in their Comments. The pedestrians are none too pleased either with almost a quarter reporting “not enough improvements for pedestrians” and of course the vast majority of motorists are scathing in their condemnation of this scheme. Yet there are a number of respondents who seek to introduce measures to save the world which is not included for in this scheme. The core elements of Active Travel have been overlooked. But generally they didn’t require consideration by the residents of CAN Most residents walk. Some residents use public transport when its available. Motorists generally use their vehicles effectively and sparingly. Rat running persists, yet the diversionary routes cause more disruption to the resident motorist than the rat as well as transferring the increased pollution caused by the disrupted journey to other roads in the area. Nothing has been done to tackle speeding, although this again is not provided for within this scheme. How can CS identify motorists who travel short distances that maybe better achieved by Active Travel? And being extremely cynical about all of this. There is one thing residents should not consider; cycling in the area. It is extremely hazardous, yet glibly understated in the Department for Transport, Cycle Infrastructure Design, Local Transport Note 1/20, page 46, 5.9.9. re. where speeds resulting from travelling up or down steep gradients creates hazards for the cyclist. And not surprisingly, when inclement weather prevails, the bike is quite often left at home. CS can’t promote introduction of this scheme with regards the cycling element. It would seem the only course CS have is to accept that some residents may wish to cycle in the area, provide signage throughout warning of the perils and notifying the cyclists that their cycling is purely permissive.

It is good to see that some of the most unworkable aspects of the scheme on Springvale Road have been abandoned. However, it is concerning that the threat of these hung over the area for almost a year, when a very basic check of the facts on the ground would have made clear that there was not enough roadspace for a diagonal closure. The continuing imposition of the one-way restriction on Springvale Road is now causing more traffic on Western Road and past the school. Also, the parking situation is now getting desperate. The double yellows painted around the failed Springvale Road closures are yet to be removed. The single yellows around Binghams essentially only exist to provide reserved parking for their staff, at the expense of school staff and residents. The School Road double yellows, I think, were necessary, but it cannot be denied that the parking situation there deteriorated since Sackville Road was blocked (this is another blockage which is virtually obsolete now that a closure of Springvale Road has been proven to be unworkable. The traffic lights are, I think, a good idea, but are not currently safe. They need to be slightly further from the junction so that turning drivers have better visibility. The lights go out frequently (whilst crossing the road with a child, I saw the lights change but they went blank as we crossed).

Yeah, you seem to be missing the main issue that effects the entire neighbourhood - over parking. If you addressed that a lot of these other issues your trying to solve get a lot easier.

No consideration on hills forcing cars onto side streets with the one way section on springvale the road is wide enough for two way traffic forcing cars on Melbourne road is ridiculous. Crossings are positive apart from often not working. You say it’s to improve and increase cyclists s10 already has the largest number of cyclists look at your own data - unlikely to get more. Buses are rubbish so why would people use public transport, sort that out first if you want people out of cars - plant pots makes side roads worse not better
