Please consider: Displacement of traffic to already congested, more polluted and densely populated roads adjacent to the boundaries of this proposal - it seems unfair to just move a problem to another area already disproportionately affected. Access needs of more vulnerable and elderly people who still needs cars and carers with cars. Allowing home owners to convert front gardens to allow cars to park off road - adjust the conservation area plans. The hills are a big challenge to moving more actively in this neighbourhood - not necessarily only the car traffic. Allow a bench to be installed half way up Union Road to allow older and less mobile people to rest half way up the hill. Some older people who live at the top of the hill need to drive to the bottom to park so that they can then get on the bus to go into the town centre. This is because they are unable to walk back up the hill. Closing roads off will prevent them from accessing public transport. It is unlikely some people living in this proposed Active Neighbourhood will be more active on bikes or walking as the steep hills do make it more challenging. Encouraging access to local parks and green spaces may be more realistic. Plus the housing stock in this neighbourhood allow most people the luxury of a garden/private outdoor space. Manage these proposals as a 'whole city' approach rather than a range of different schemes that don't particularly work as a system change - if public transport was genuinely more affordable and comprehensive, people would change their behaviour. A short journey for one adult and one child to town and back is almost £8 which is unaffordable. This is more than most journeys taken in the centre of London. A car journey including petrol and parking is less than half that. Other European cities are built on a strong network of clean, efficient, reliable and affordable public transport. Cycling is not a truly realistic option for most as proposed new/expanded cycle routes are still shared with roads and there is no physical boundary keeping cyclists safe. The Sheffield Council approach appears to be deliberately trying to make it so difficult for car owners that they are forced to change their behaviour. Could we have a city-wide system approach that makes it so easy to not use a car that people would think it is ridiculous to use one?

Which roads within the boundary of the proposed Active Neighbourhood would you identify as being the most problematic at the moment? How do you think we can address the issues?

Nether Edge Road is the main thoroughfare for cars trying to avoid Abbeydale Road congestion. Rupert Road is used, mostly by taxi drivers to cut the corner. Ashland Road for other drivers trying to avoid Nether Edge Road. Union Road is a cut through to get to Psalter Lane more quickly.

Many pavements are in poor repair and too narrow for people with mobility scooters to use safely and with confidence. Cars are often parked on pavements making the way through awkward. There are too few dropped curbs to safely cross at several junctions in the area.

With people parking on the pavements, wheelchair access is awful. My dad uses a wheelchair but basically doesn't go out as he doesn't like being on the road

I regularly drive through the area, work commitments and time pressure means I’m unlikely to use any other means of transportation. The roads around here are difficult to negotiate as is because of limited parking and people choosing to cycle up safely down the centre of the road. Any changes need proper monitoring and someone out in the area enforcing safe practice and the Highway Code!
