The bus gate on the northbound carriageway of Arundel Gate is now operational. The bus gate will limit vehicular traffic travelling northbound along Arundel Gate between the Novotel Hotel junction and Norfolk Street. The bus gate will only allow buses, coaches, registered hackney carriages and private hire taxis and cyclists to pass through.
Installing a bus gate here will provide increased public transport priority to ease congestion and support faster journey times.
The bus gate has been implemented through an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO). This is now live and a statutory consultation period has begun, you can now make formal comments on the scheme as part of the statutory consultation process. Please check the webpage for information on how to make formal comments on the scheme as part of the statutory consultation process.
Enforcement cameras are located at the bus gate and unauthorised vehicles, such as private cars, will now be charged for going through the bus gate; registered keepers of unauthorised vehicles using the bus gate will be issued with a fixed penalty charge notice. Warning signs and direction signs for routes to avoid the bus gate have been installed to ensure people are aware of it and have the opportunity to avoid it.

Once the bus gate has been installed, a further period of statutory consultation will follow – this will be part of the Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO) process. All feedback received throughout the pre-implementation consultation, as well as the statutory consultation process, will be considered before a decision is made on whether the bus gate will be retained. More information on how to give feedback during the ETRO consultation will be posted on this website in due course. Please check our website for further details from Monday 27 February.
Sheffield City Council has been given the opportunity from Central Government to apply for new powers to help make our roads safer and more reliable. We already have some of these powers, such as the enforcement of bus, taxi and tram gates, which have proved successful in managing the highway network over a number of years. The chance of having more of these types of powers will ultimately allow us to have more control over illegal manoeuvres to further help our ambition to improve road safety and congestion.
Ahead of applying for new powers for the enforcement of Traffic Management Act 2004 – Part 6, Sheffield City Council is seeking residents’ views on a number of proposed locations where moving traffic regulations could be enforced by the Authority.
You can find out more and complete the questionnaire by clicking here: https://connectingsheffield.commonplace.is/en-GB/proposals/enforcing-moving-traffic-offences-traffic-management-act-2004-part-6/step1
The consultation is open until the 31st December 2022.
Based on traffic monitoring and public feedback received on the Crookes and Walkley Active Neighbourhood measures which have been implemented so far throughout the trial period, the engineers have worked on a full update to the measures in conjunction with ward councillors and are now able to provide an update on the scheme to residents and businesses.
