It pleases me that Sheffield City Council have finally decided to address the vehicle-centric approach to the city centre, although I appreciate some improvements have been made over the past 10 years. I have a number of comments. I have numbered them 1 to X to make it easier to follow. 1. The key comment I would make is that these plans should not be isolated, but be part of an integrated and holistic strategy to environmentally friendly transport options for Sheffield, with walking and cycling prioritised for those that are able and excellent public transport provisions for other users. With an ambitious transport policy, such as introduction of - or an increase if already in place - subsidies on tickets, or even city-wide free travel for Sheffield citizens, the increase in use will surely bring economic benefits to businesses in the centre. The main gripe I have with transport infrastructure presently is it is haphazard and implemented with a 'bolt-on' or 'sticking plaster' mentality. For example, provision of cyclelanes with poorly thought out design or barriers such as advertising boards added post construction. The inconsistency in design/colourscheme is also an issue and leads to frustration from cyclists and stokes tension between vehicle users, pedestrians and cyclists. Ensure the colour scheme, signage and designs are consistent not only throughout these plans, but also set a standard for all future cycling infrastructure works. 2. I note that the cycleways do not indicate whether or not they are segregated. I would urge the council to put in place separate, segregated cycleways for main routes such as those along public roads/highways and especially where these cycleways are part of a contraflow system. This not only protects cyclists, but also minimises risk to pedestrians and reduces any chances of collisions and tensions. 3. I haven't been able to fully digest how these plans will look once completed, but I would ask that the council consider carefully the design of cycleways within the city centre area where they carve through pedestrianised areas, compared to cycleways that are on public highways. Cyclists come in all levels of ability, with some happy to amble along as leisure and others preferring to reach their destination as quickly as possible. Just as we expect vehicles to be more aware and considerate when driving through areas with many pedestrians that could be crossing (such as Pistone Street or Barkers Pool for example), the design of the cycleway in this built up area should encourage careful and slower cycling, unless a separate and segregated expressway style cycleway is also going to be available. On cycleways where there are fewer pedestrians such as alongside public roads/highways, then the design should encourage free-flowing cycling to cater for all abilities and allowing space for quicker cyclists to safely overtake. Conclusion: Overall, I fully support these plans. They are a good stepping stone to beginning a healthy travel revolution for Sheffield, which if implemented well will benefit the city in multiple ways (environmental benefits, economic, quality of life, health etc). I see these as something that should be part of a broader holistic approach to transport infrastructure and accessibility for Sheffield. X. I would suggest that a lot can be learned from major cities that have redesigned their central areas to be pedestrian and cycle friendly; Amsterdam and Copenhagen are the well known and obvious examples, but other cities such as London's implementation of the Cycle Superhighway and places further afield such as Bogotá and Medellín both in Colombia.

Looks good: I particularly like that the scheme should result in a city centre where it's safer and more enjoyable to walk and cycle; also that the additional plantings etc will make it visually more appealing including for children. One minor quirk I've noticed relates to the trees illustrated on the plans: Where these are placed could obstruct sightlines at crossing points for walkers and cyclists (an illustration of where this is currently a problem unrelated to this scheme is crossing Eyre St from Decathlon to what was Office World: The vegetation there can obscure inbound vehicles). Anyway in this scheme that issue looks to be present at several places, I notice esp. opposite St. Pauls City Lofts (Arundel Gate) obscuring traffic coming from the adjacent roundabout and the Eyre St crossing obscuring traffic from Furnival Square. Finally that the cycle lanes at the junction of Barkers Pool and Pinstone St seem excessively wiggly: I recognise a wish to keep cycling speeds low at this location, but cycle lanes this contorted might encourage some cyclists to bypass the designated cycle lanes entirely, so this might benefit from some adjustment; esp. consider that 'cyclists' will include those on cargo bikes that will find it difficult to navigate very sharp turns as here.

I am not a confident cyclist and improvements like this would encourage me to cycle in the city more. It would also greatly improve my pedestrian experience! Really hope this goes through :)
